Winter Comfort Mitten Pies (Printer-Friendly)

Flaky mitten-shaped hand pies filled with warm spiced apple, ideal for festive winter gatherings.

# What You Need:

→ Pastry

01 - 2 sheets (approximately 17.6 oz) ready-made puff pastry, thawed if frozen
02 - 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

→ Apple Filling

03 - 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
04 - 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
05 - 1 tablespoon brown sugar
06 - 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
07 - 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
08 - 1 teaspoon lemon juice
09 - 1 teaspoon cornstarch

→ Decoration (Optional)

10 - Pearl sugar or coarse sanding sugar
11 - Icing made from powdered sugar mixed with a little milk

# Directions:

01 - Preheat the oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
02 - In a medium bowl, combine diced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Toss thoroughly and set aside.
03 - Roll out the puff pastry sheets on a lightly floured surface. Using a mitten-shaped cutter or a paper template with a sharp knife, cut out 16 mitten shapes.
04 - Place 8 mitten-shaped cutouts on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon a heaping tablespoon of apple filling onto the center of each, leaving a border around the edges.
05 - Brush edges of the pastry with beaten egg. Place the remaining 8 cutouts over the filling. Press edges gently with a fork to seal securely.
06 - Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash. If desired, sprinkle with pearl or sanding sugar for added texture.
07 - Use a knife to cut a small vent on each hand pie to allow steam to escape during baking.
08 - Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
09 - Allow the hand pies to cool slightly. Optionally, drizzle with prepared icing for decoration.
