01 - In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy.
02 - Add the egg and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture and mix thoroughly until combined.
03 - Gradually add flour and salt, stirring gently until the dough just comes together without overmixing.
04 - Shape the dough into a disk, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
05 - Set the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
06 - On a lightly floured surface, roll the chilled dough to about 1/5 inch thickness and cut into heart and star shapes, making a small hole near the top for ribbons.
07 - Arrange shaped dough on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges are lightly golden.
08 - Transfer cookies to a wire rack and let them cool thoroughly.
09 - Mix powdered sugar with lemon juice or water until smooth and spreadable; add food coloring if desired.
10 - Spread or pipe the glaze onto cooled cookies and allow to set completely.
